At 93, following the death of his wife, a widower had become increasingly anxious about managing alone. Staying independent at home was very important to him, but he had lost confidence in everyday tasks and was worried about falling.
He was referred to Making Connections, and we matched him with a volunteer who visits weekly, offering companionship, reassurance and practical support. Even being there on bin collection day helped ease a task that had become a source of stress.
Over time, this trusted relationship helped rebuild his confidence and provided a safe space to talk about other concerns. With support from the Making Connections team, he agreed to a care plan, and we worked with the Public Health Nurse to arrange a home care package.
This story demonstrates the power of early intervention and community connection. By listening, building trust and connecting people with the right support, we can help older people feel safer, more confident and less alone — supporting them to continue living independently at home, with dignity.
Sometimes, a simple helping hand can be the first step towards renewed confidence, connection and independence.
